Here are the answers to the questions we get asked often.

Spoiler alert: yes—you keep your clothes on!

  • Halotherapy ("halos" in Greek means salt) aka Salt Therapy, is an alternative, spa-like treatment for a wide variety of ailments and conditions such as asthma, allergies, anxiety, inflammation, skin issues, and even the common cold. During a Salt Therapy treatment, clients simply breathe in salt air from specialized equipment, in a salt cave designed to resemble the authentic salt caves of Eastern Europe.

Pure Himalayan salt is naturally anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and antimicrobial. The treatment offers a unique, natural therapy that provides a sense of peace and serenity while simply breathing in a relaxing, meditative environment.

The salt air is made up of negatively-charged ionized salt particles, 84 trace elements and minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium, iodine, bromine, copper, selenium, and iron. These particles help to clear all pollens, viruses, pollutants, and toxins from the lungs and nasal passageways, which works to treat and prevent illness. The salt also works to heal the body as soon as its negative ions enter the nasal passageway, which then travel through the respiratory tract and into the bloodstream to be dispersed throughout the body.

  • In our 45-minute Scituate Salt Cave sessions, visitors breathe in the benefits of Salt Therapy while relaxing on zero-gravity chairs within a dimly-lit salt cave made from 30,000 pounds of glowing Himalayan salt bricks. Soothing background music and sounds of the ocean help quiet your mind, while the twinkling constellations above help inspire relaxation and reflection. Our large Salt Cave, named Virgo after one of the largest constellations in the sky, can host up to 12 guests while our other Cave, Crux after the smallest constellation, offers a more intimate experience for smaller groups.

  • Too much salt on your plate may not be good for you, but inhaling salt and salty skin is much different. Salt Therapy has amazing benefits including:

    * Reducing the symptoms of asthma, allergies, emphysema, COPD, and other respiratory issues.

    * Expanding your lung capacity so that you can breathe easier with increased oxygen flow and lung function.

    * Boosting your immune system. Like a dose of Vitamin SEA it decreases your chances of catching a cold, flu, or other viruses.

    * Making your skin feel salty smooth and clear reducing the effects of eczema, psoriasis, and acne.

    * Relieving stress allowing you to unplug for 45 minutes of pure, peaceful bliss. Boost of serotonin included!

    * Providing relief to arthritis sufferers and those with joint pain.

    * Treating headaches and migraines, snoring and sleep apnea, depression and seasonal affective disorder, cystic fibrosis, sinusitis, muscle tension, ear infections, and ADD/ADHD.

    * And our favorite benefit….it’s anti-aging benefits! Remember where it all started with the salt miners in Poland out-living their life expectancy.

  • Our Himalayan pink salt is imported all the way from the Punjab, Pakistan region of the Himalayan mountains. It is said to be leftover from the primordial sea, which left behind the salt deposits as it evaporated. Some of the salt is also sourced from the Monks in Tibet.

  • A device called a Halogenerator grinds pure pharmaceutical-grade sodium chloride into dry, aerosol microns of salt that are dispersed into the salt cave. While simply sitting back and relaxing, the micro-particles land on the skin and are inhaled. The particles penetrate deep into the lungs, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli as well as into the deeper layers of the skin. Each cave has it’s very own Halogenerator to maximize the benefits for all of our guests.

  • Please friends, keep your clothes on. You should come fully-clothed in your favorite comfy apparel. We invite you to wear whatever you would like inside the cave and our only requirement is that you remove your shoes. For health and safety reasons, socks are required in all caves. But don’t worry, if you forget your socks, we’ll provide you with your own pair of fashionable foot booties.

  • The temperature inside the cave is carefully controlled to maintain the best environment for the salt. The temperature falls between 68 and 70 degrees, so if that might feel a tad chilly to you—you may want to bring your favorite hoodie. We do offer blankets for extra coziness and comfort.

  • We have two caves at Scituate Salt Cave. Our large cave, Virgo, fits up to 12 adults and the small cave, Crux fits up to 4 guests. If your session is during our Community Cave times, you may be alongside other people in the large cave. You may book the large cave privately with a minimum of 4 Guests for an additional $10 per Guest. The small cave will always only hold one party. Please contact us directly if you would like more information about private cave time.

  • Salt Therapy is safe for just about everyone—regardless of age. However, it is not recommended for those who have recently undergone an organ transplant. If you do have concerns please discuss them with your doctor before experiencing a session inside the Cave. [Please read our disclaimer before visiting the salt cave.]

  • Salt is good for you—but not for your devices. Cell phones and other electronics should not be brought inside the Cave; we hope you’ll appreciate this relaxing break from your screens. You may leave your belongings in the provided cubbies for the duration of your session.

  • You will not need to shower immediately after a session. You’ll be able to carry on with your day as usual—almost as if you took a walk on the beach. But you’ll notice something different. A pep in your step, a breath that feels deeper, and if you lick your lips you’ll taste that familiar salty taste, reminding you about your Salt Therapy session (or your favorite Margarita).

  • Absolutely! Caving is for everyone, and kids love the Cave! Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

  • All of our Salt Therapy sessions begin promptly at the top of each hour so we ask you to arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled session time. Once the session begins on the hour, new guests are not allowed to enter the Scituate Salt Cave. If you are late and arrive after the session has started, we will work with you to reschedule your session.

  • Yes! We love Salty Celebrations and caving is more fun with friends! Both of the Scituate Salt Caves are available for private and group bookings. Our large cave, Virgo, fits up to 12 guests and the small cave, Crux fits up to 4 guests. Please note that beverages are never allowed inside the Scituate Salt Caves.

  • During your Salt Cave experience, moisture is absorbed from your body and will continue to clear toxins, bacteria, and mucus even after your visit. Just like sitting on the beach, you might feel a bit parched after breathing in healthy salt air. After your Scituate Salt Cave therapy session, you may feel thirsty and we recommend that you drink lots of water before and after your session. We will have water available for you, but feel free to bring your own water bottle.

  • With Salt Therapy the salt micro-particles enter your airways or are absorbed through your skin. They are not ingested. It is similar to spending a day at the ocean. While consuming too much salt in your digestive tract may pose health concerns for those with high blood pressure, salt particles in the air will not pose health issues. The relaxing, meditative environment in the Scituate Salt Cave might even help lower your blood pressure. Please talk to your doctor if you have any questions or concerns. You may also reference our disclaimer for details.

  • We value your business and appreciate your cooperation with our cancellation guidelines. If you must change or cancel your reservation, please notify us at least 48 hours in advance. Late cancellations will be charged 50% and no-shows will be charged in full. Late cancellations within 48 hours for Classes, Workshops, Private Reiki, Readings and Special Events will also be charged in full unless the space can be filled by another attendee. Please arrive at least 10 minutes early for your scheduled session as we are unable to allow latecomers into the cave after a session has started. If you happen to be late, the same conditions of a no-show will apply.
