Treat yourself to relaxation, better health, beautiful skin, and easier breathing with Salt Therapy and welcome a happier, healthier lifestyle.

First discovered in the salt mines of Poland, and later recognized as an accepted alternative preventative and restorative health treatment, Halotherapy, or Salt Therapy, is an ancient, natural, complementary therapy that involves exposure to and inhalation of dry, salt-infused air.

About Salt Therapy

Scituate Salt Cave.jpg

Have you noticed that after a day at the beach, your skin is clearer, you breathe more deeply and easily? This is due to the natural mix of salt in the air. Research has shown that Himalayan salt crystals emit naturally-occurring negative ions that reduce stress and fatigue while supporting a sense of well-being. Himalayan salt’s natural antibacterial, antiviral, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and superabsorbent properties provide a variety of wellness and beauty therapeutic treatments.

The Scituate Salt Cave Experience

When you enter our indoor salt cave, all the day’s stress quickly disappears. This tranquil, spa-like setting helps to ease symptoms of anxiety, depression, and fatigue, as well as certain health, respiratory and skin conditions. Recline in the crushed salt beneath you or rest in a zero-gravity chair beside the salt fireplace hearth. Gaze at the constellations above you or close your eyes and simply breathe in the resorative properties of the natural Himalayan salt air. To enhance your experience, you can select a guided meditation to help you ease into your relaxed state, and take advantage of other offerings such as ionic foot bath detoxes, yoga, group Reiki, and spiritual and wellness workshops. The temperature in the cave is cool and comfortable. No sweating involved, so wear your favorite comfy clothes. If you want a cozy blanket, we have plenty right there for you. Should you feel the need to move, you can stretch out on a blanket and feel the healing properties of the crushed salt on the ground directly beneath you. Like a fireside evening under the stars on the beach!

Halotherapy, or Salt Therapy

The natural salt air is created through a process called Halotherapy, or salt therapy. A device known as a halogenerator disperses dry, aerosol micro-particles of pharmaceutical-grade salt into the air of the salt cave. As you breathe, minerals found in the salt such as calcium, potassium, and iron are absorbed by both the skin and your air passageways. This can help clear pollens, viruses, toxins, and other pollutants from the body. The negatively charged ionized salt and trace minerals that are present in the cave’s atmosphere are said to naturally draw toxins and impurities out of the body, reduce inflammation, and improve respiratory ailments like asthma by clearing the lungs.

History of Salt Therapy

Relatively new to those of us in the U.S., Salt Therapy is known worldwide throughout Asia and Europe. It originated in Eastern Europe with roots dating back to the 1800s where a doctor at the Wieliczka salt mines noticed that the miners had fewer bouts of asthma, allergies and hay fever – all as a result of breathing in the salt-infused air within the microclimate of a salt mine. It was officially recognized as a therapy by the Polish physician, Dr. Feliks Boczkowski in 1843.

Benefits of Salt Therapy

Salt Therapy has been shown to alleviate symptoms of many ailments of body and mind, such as: allergies, asthma, bronchitis, eczema, psoriasis, sleep disorders, stress, anxiety, depression…and more.

Stress Relief

When it comes to stress release, the benefits of Salt Therapy are two-fold:

  1. The Relaxing Salt Cave Experience – When you enter our salt cave, you escape from everyday life to sit quietly for 45 uninterrupted minutes in a calming, meditative environment, providing you with the opportunity to unplug from your day and relax.

  2. Negative Ions Calm and Relax Nerves – When salt breaks down it creates a high concentration of negative ions in the room. These negative ions can calm and relax the nerves by normalizing breathing rate, decreasing blood pressure, and relieving tension and stress.

Skin Benefits

Skin conditions such as psoriasis, rashes, eczema, and acne can be improved with halotherapy as your skin absorbs the mineral salt from the air. Pure mineral salts, such as Himalayan salt, have natural moisturizing properties and support the skin’s water balance and barrier function by attracting moisture to the skin. Minerals are necessary for cell function and detoxification, so mineral salts have strong rejuvenating properties.

Upper Respiratory Conditions

As you breathe, minerals (like calcium, potassium, and iron) contained in the purest version of salt are absorbed by both the skin and your air passageways, which can help clear pollens, viruses, toxins, and other pollutants from the body. The negatively-charged, ionized salt and trace minerals that are present in the cave’s atmosphere are said to naturally draw toxins and impurities out of the body, reduce inflammation, and improve respiratory ailments like asthma by clearing the lungs.

Deep Tissue Relaxation

The breakdown of the salt into negative ions helps increase oxygen levels in the blood and facilitates more efficient oxygen utilization. Additionally, by normalizing serotonin production in the brain, negative ions help to accelerate physical recovery from workouts/training sessions, and injury.

Healthier…and Happier

Besides the physical health benefits, Himalayan Salt Therapy can lift your spirits by increasing your serotonin levels, the “happy hormones” that positively impact mood, sleep, memory, appetite, and digestion.

Health Benefits of Negative Ionization

Due to the chemical composition of salt crystals, they are an ideal source of negative ions, which are often described as a natural antidepressant and recognized as a source for promoting a sense of well-being. Negative ions are oxygen atoms charged with an extra electron. They  are odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments such as near waterfalls, at the beach, and in a salt cave.

The Top 5 Benefits of Negative Ions:

  1. Increase your sense of well-being and mental clarity by removing the debilitating effects of excessive positive ions in the environment. Pierce J. Howard Ph.D at the Center for Applied Cognitive Sciences says, "Negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness and more mental energy."

  2. Kill dust, pollen, mold, viruses, bacteria, and allergens are killed by negative ions. Dr. Albert P. Krueger, a Microbiologist and experimental Pathologist at the University of California, found that an astonishing small quantity of negative ions could kill bacteria and quickly take them out of the air so they were less likely to infect people.

  3. Improve the function of the cilia in your respiratory tract that protect lungs from irritation and inflammation. This leads to less instances of respiratory illnesses like colds, flu, hay fever, and even asthma.

  4. Promote relaxation and have been reported to normalize breathing rates, decrease blood pressure, and relieve tension. Negative ions are absorbed directly into the bloodstream and may help to combat free radicals within the body.

  5. Improve sleep. A French study found they could help you sleep better by normalizing serotonin production in the brain.
